Time Management Tips for the 11+

19 October 2026

Knowing the answers is only part of the 11+. Children also need to work at a steady pace so they reach the end of each section. The format varies by area, but in many cases the papers are split into short sections, each with its own time limit, and answers go on a separate multiple choice answer sheet.

Know the format

Look at the familiarisation materials for your area. How many questions are in each section, and how long is allowed? Dividing the time by the number of questions gives a rough idea of how long each question should take. Your child does not need to time every question, but knowing the rhythm helps.

Don't get stuck

If a question is taking too long, make a best guess, note it to come back to if there is time, and move on. A hard question is usually worth the same as an easy one further along. In a multiple choice paper, a sensible guess is better than a blank.

Read carefully, but don't overthink

Rushing leads to misread questions, and going over the same question again and again wastes time. Encourage your child to read once properly, underline key words if they are allowed to write on the paper, and trust their first careful answer.

Keep the answer sheet in step

If your child skips a question, they need to skip the matching line on the answer sheet too. A quick check every few questions stops a whole section slipping out of line.

Build speed gradually

Start without a clock so your child can focus on accuracy. Once they are comfortable, add gentle time limits to short sets of questions, then build up to full timed sections.

Stay calm if time runs short

Falling behind happens. The answer is to keep moving, pick up the questions that look quickest, and not to panic.

Rehearse at home

A couple of full papers under test conditions in the weeks before the test help your child get a feel for the timing. Use a quiet room, a clock they can see and no interruptions.

Steady beats speedy!
